Sounds like the hard drive is on it's way out...backup all your data while you still can and take it in to be checked.!

They usually fail between 3-5yrs...how old is yours.?

Sarni,

SMART is a technology built into hard drives the past made in the past 10 years or so. It monitors several key operating attributes of the drive. When one or more of these attributes reach a certain threshold, the drive is deemed as "failing" and it will report this status to the system. The BIOS, if it has SMART support enabled, will then give you a POST error telling you that the drive is failing so that you can perform a backup and replace the drive before it fails completely.

Now, SMART isn't 100% perfect - there are times when you might get false SMART Failure reports, but this is rare. If you get a SMART failure warning, there are two things you can try:

1. Check for a firmware update for your drive - this will ensure that the drive isn't producing a "false" report. If no BIOS update is available, then the failure report is probably accurate.

2. Check for a BIOS update for your system. Again, sometimes the BIOS will report a false SMART error - if the BIOS is up-to-date and the sMART error still occurs (even with a drive firmware udpate), then the error is accurate and the drive is failing - time to get a new drive.

One last thing you can try is to download the drive diagnostic utility for your specific drive. Maxtor, Western Digital, and Hitachi (IBM) provide a diagnostic utility that will check the drive and fix "simple" problems. You can download them from their websites:

http://www.maxtor.com
http://www.wdc.com
http://www.hgst.com

Good luck!

I am having the same issue. Whenever I boot the PC, I receive the "1720 SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure" error. I just replaced the hard drive in the PC but am still getting the error. I have a Western Digital Cavier drive.
BIOS has been update. Hard drive does not have a firmware update available.

What else could be the problem?
Any help is appreciated !!

whenever you see the following error message: 1720 SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure. Call HP and get your Hard Drive Disk replaced if your computer is still under warranty PERIOD.

Rachel, Luis,
if this warning appears the HDD is defective and is no longer able to cover bad sectors.
The HDD will die sooner or later and writing to the HDD may cause corruption due to bad sectors.

If this appears:
1.) Immediately make a backup of all of your data and/or an image of the HDD.

2.) Replace the HDD with a new one.
a) If the machine is still covered by warranty, call HP and open a case. They will send you a new drive and - depending an the warranty scheme - send a serviceman to change the drives.

b) Otherwise by a new HDD. You can use a HDD from any manufacturer (no need to buy the thing from HP).

Let me repeat:
It's a deadly sin to work with a HDD which shows the said symptoms.

I'd suggest that you DON'T think of trying to keep the old disk going, but "bite the bullet" and go for a new disk
We've had a fair few Maxtor 40GB IDE give this message, the odd few we've tried to stretch out have failed, not too bad from our view as we can PXE a new image and users should't have any data on the disk.
If you can get a a second drive in the PC use one of the disk copy progs, they make the transfer painless (but sometimes slow if the NTFS indexes are a little ragged)

batool gassem,
no need to do something with the BIOS.

Do as advised:
Immediately backup all of the data to an external medium.
And stop *working* with it. With this error appearing everything saved to the HDD is close to Nirvana.

You may then try use the test/diagnostics/repair tool offered by the drive's manufacturer (see their website).

Unless you have very rare special situation most probably diagnostics will tell you that the drive has reached the end of it's life-cycle.

I have read all of these and I am having the same problem. The only thing different with me is that I can't get past that window with the error message to back up anything. How do I get past that window?
Chipman Rachel

My experience is that if you can't get beyond the message, then the hard drive is dead. You can try booting the PC with an Operating System (O/S) CD (such as windows XP) and see if you can access the hard drive that way.

If not, then I would suggest getting a new hard drive installed in the PC and once that is configured with the O/S, etc., try attaching the old hard drive as a secondary drive in the PC and see if you are able to access it that way.

Hope that helps.
